Lemon and Garlic thin steaks

World Recipes Syrian lemon steaks

Ingredients

  • 500g of thin slices of lamb or beef steak
  • 5 cloves of garlic mashed
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 3 tablespoons of olive oil
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method

  1. The steak needs to be a very tender cut for the best results.  Cut to around 1cm thick.
  2. Sprinkle the steaks with salt and pepper.
  3. Heat the oil and saute the steaks on medium heat for 2-4 minutes on each side until well done.
  4. Mix the lemon juice, mashed garlic and a pinch of salt.
  5. Add the lemon garlic mixture to the pan containing the steaks.  There should be a spitting sizzle.  Ensure that the mixture gets to both sides of all the steaks.
  6. If you are using beef turn off the heat for two minutes and serve immediately.
  7. If using lamb turn the heat down to very low, cover and leave for 30 minutes until all the liquid evaporates.
  8. Serve with flat bread or chips and a Syrian Salad or Tabouli Salad.

This meal was made for me by two young teenage Syrian Refugee children who had escaped the war and found their way across Europe to France to The Jungle in Calais.  I had to meet the girls and their foster parents in a French City to ensure that any problems they had were addressed by the charity caring for them.

Try this delicious dish and as enjoy it do remember the girls who gave me the recipe and what they suffered in their journey to safety.  Also, remember their parents who sent them to safety and now the girls do not know if they will every see them again.
