Gravy Block - Burdalls?

Ingredients

  • 25 kg Course sea salt
  • 25 kg Fine salt
  • 4 pints of caramel

 

or you can make it with less

  • 1 kg Course sea salt
  • 1 kg Fine salt
  • 75 ml of caramel

or you can reduce it even further

Method

  1. Mix the salts together and continue mixing while you add the caramel
  2. When evenly absorbed put the mixture in a press and allow to dry

Note if you use the 25kg method you will make enough gravy block to sell to the whole country, if you make the 1kg quantity I think it will last you a lifetime so maybe reduce even further.

Burdalls stopped making Gravy Block or Gravy Salt at their factory in Wymondham, Leicestershire until December 2000.  I must have purchased some shortly after that, maybe 3 packets and in January 2018 I have just used the last.  So I tried the recipe and my goodness it works.   

Just like the original stuff.  Bisto granules are no substitute. 

A completely different product but you do need to know how to make proper gravy.
